In the early days of dabbing, there was a hardcore DIY, utilitarian streak to the community. Homemade butane blasting chambers, crudely put together rigs, and repurposed knives and pokers serving as dabbers were the norm. Luckily, we’re free of those dark days and everything from cold start bangers to custom handmade dabbers have elevated the experience.
That’s exactly where my mind went when I was graciously offered the opportunity to add one of Nick Boddy’s @hippiesgalleria on Instagram) custom made dabbers to my concentrate routine.
Nick creates a massive variety of custom dabbing straws and tools in almost every shape imaginable. Each piece is one of a kind and lathed by hand. My dabber came standing at just over four and half inches tall with a classic pointed tip and a well weighted resin handle that was layered with sky blue, ocean blue, and clear.
I enjoyed the wide flat bottom that allowed me to keep the tool standing when I wasn’t using it and the weight in my hands as I’m dosing out my concentrates and using them. The tiny point has become so cherished to me that I’ve given it a special place as my “rosin only” dab wand, hopefully something that will get a lot more use as we move through 2022.
More than anything, I appreciated the sense of occasion this custom piece added to my routine. The DIY utilitarianism of the old days was a product of the fact that cannabis simply didn’t have the widespread business support that is currently flourishing.
It feels nice to hold a quality handmade piece to proudly use something I legally purchased. These small creators like Nick are not only making cherished items that will last a long time, they’re helping to normalize cannabis with their work.
