Review: Purple Monarch by Revolution
Only a few cultivars have reached the levels of notoriety that Granddaddy Purple has. GDP is two decades old this year, but age hasn’t stopped consumers from demanding the classic indica. Revolution Cannabis is bringing its GDP genetics back to the market through some interesting in-house crosses resulting in their newest release, Purple Monarch. I recently stopped into Enlightened Mt. Prospect and picked up an eighth to review.
Purple Monarch is an indica-leaning hybrid cross of King Crasher and (Grandaddy Purple and Dosidos) created in-house by Revolution. This batch of flower tested at 0.98% THC, 27.14% THCa, and 29.61% total cannabinoids. The indicated terpenes were β-myrcene, β-caryophyllene, limonene, linalool, and α-humulene.
The eighth came as a robust handful of chunky cola tips. Sparkling with a notably dense trichome frost, the light green flowers had been meticulously trimmed and carried a very bright orange hair presence. A light squeeze revealed a spongy nerfy texture.
The aroma inside the jar was tangy and floral with highlights of petrol, artificial grape, lavender, and honeysuckle on the top end. Richer undertones of cream, soil, green pepper and garden basil added some complexity and broke through the floral character of the top end. The flavor carried grape on the front, albeit with less of the over the top artificial character it carried in the aroma, along with the heavy cream, basil, and soil taking up the exhale.
Purple Monarch provided a strong and heavy-bodied experience that began with pressure in my face and then spread throughout my muscles and joints, inducing deep relaxation. It struck a good balance between releasing tension and feeling physically weighted, ensuring that the sensations never became too overwhelming.
Mentally, I maintained focus while gradually entering a state of calm, relaxation, and ease. Overall, Revolution has successfully showcased the traits people look for in GDP strains: bold flavors and a rich, yet calming experience with Purple Monarch.
