Are Illinois’ monthly cannabis sales about to change?
Now that Public Act 104-463 (Senate Bill 3222) has been signed into law, will the new provisions, such as doubling allotments and adding drive-through pickup, increase monthly cannabis sales in Illinois? The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) released recreational cannabis sales totals for March, April, and May 2026. One category to watch will be out-of-state resident sales.
March sales totals reached $115,431,757.03, with 4,575,409 total items sold. March in-state sales totals were $93,111,963.06 and out-of-state sales were $22,319,793.97.
April sales totals reached $115,409,576.27, with 4,860,235 items sold. April in-state sales totals were $93,281,520.82 and out-of-state sales were $22,128,055.45.
May sales totals reached $119,828,550.48, with 4,868,442 items sold. May in-state sales totals were $96,610,328.39 and out-of-state sales were $23,218,222.09.
Illinois switched to a new seed-to-sale track-and-trace data system in July 2025. A note from IDFPR stated, “The State of Illinois went live with a new, state-of-the-art seed-to-sale, track-and-trace data system in July 2025. The new system, Metrc, rolled out across the cannabis industry over several months and concluded in June. The sales trackingfeatures in Metrc help retailers more accurately and reliably report actual sales, including all discounts and promotions at checkout. A thorough review of past data indicates prior months collected some pre-discount prices. The number of items sold remained consistent across months, resulting in the improved data showing cannabis consumers have been paying less at checkout and with pre-tax prices similar to prices in other states that have legalized adult use cannabis. Sales receipts, subject to tax and tax collections, reported directly to the Illinois Department of Revenue by retailers were accurate and not impacted by the non-discounted prices reported through the previous seed-to-sale system.”
2026 total monthly sales include:
January: $110,686,391.60
February: $104,760,737.80
March: $115,431,757.03
April: $115,409,576.27
May: $119,828,550.48
