My experience at the KVL Flower Ball
By Tammee Miles
For weeks, I had been watching on my socials KVL International handing out flowers to budtenders at dispensaries throughout Illinois, and I must say, I was a little jealous. Because I’m not budtending anymore, I waited too late to buy tickets, and the show was sold out. So, when asked to cover the event for Illinois News Joint on short notice, I had secretly planned my outfit weeks ago, so I responded with, “Sure.”
The event was held on the outskirts of Chicago’s West Side at CineCity Studios Chicago. The expo portion during the day showcased brands owned by black and brown folks in Illinois. Brands such as Jane and Mary’s infused ice cream, which I finally got a chance to try and Oh. My. Puffs!!!! Need I say more! Also, The 1937 Groups own brands, Old Pal, Bloom, newbies Canna Bella Lux, and Potli, whose cute walking charcuterie board infused with its Sriracha and whose honey was in that delicious Jane and Mary’s ice cream. The event also included live performances and an art exhibition.
I could tell the time was getting close to the fashion portion of the day because I noticed people’s attire starting to change. The dress codes stated “artistic cocktail” attire, and people understood the assignment. As we gathered for the Community Impact Reception, the Founder of The 1937 Group, Ambrose Jackson, presented the impact award winner to Healthy Hood Chicago: a non-profit holistic health community organization. Jackson also explained his views on the whole reasoning behind the flower ball. “Giving flowers and recognizing and acknowledging the organizations who we believe most impact our communities,” Jackson said.
The fashion show followed, so we headed to our seats. I was at the top. “Wow!” is all I can say! The clothing presented by the different designers was innovative, fun, and beautiful, and I can personally see myself wearing the fresh designs. My first KVL Ball experience allowed me to put on some artistic cocktail attire and enjoy seeing all my black and brown people celebrated in the Illinois cannabis space.
