Pritzker appoints cannabis union officer to Employment Security Board of Review
Governor JB Pritzker announced yesterday three appointments to his administration. The board and commission appointments were for the Employment Security Board of Review, Illinois Health Benefits Exchange Advisory Committee, and Illinois Health Benefits Exchange Advisory Committee. Teresa Ramirez, who currently serves as the Director of Organizing for Local 881 UFCW, will serve as a Member of the Employment Security Board of Review.
According to the announcement, “Ramirez brings over 21 years of experience as an advocate for workers throughout Illinois. An Officer of Local 881 UFCW, she currently serves over 34,000 retail and grocery members as Recorder and as the Director of Organizing, bringing vital union protections to cannabis workers in the State. Ramirez joined the Union as a rank-and-file worker, and after her strong leadership skills were recognized, she was asked to join the staff. She has served in a variety of capacities, including administrative, membership services, Union Representative, and Assistant Field Director.”
According to its website, “The Board of Review considers appeals of department decisions on claims for benefits under Unemployment Insurance Act and various federal programs related to unemployment insurance administered by the department, except claims involving labor disputes.” The appointment pays $15,000 per year and is a 2-year term beginning the third Monday of odd-numbered years, and until successor is appointed and qualified.
For the other two appointments, Wendy Epstein was appointed to the Illinois Health Benefits Exchange Advisory Committee, and Melody Spann was appointed to the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. Appointments are pending until confirmation by the Illinois Senate.
