Review: 773 Kush by Funky Monkey
Many major regional cannabis brands eventually spawn a namesake strain: think High-25 in Colorado, LA Confidential in California, or NYC Diesel in the Empire State, just to name a few. A few Illinois cultivators have already created specific namesakes strains, and I enjoy seeing the list grow. So when I spotted 4Front’s 773 Kush by Funky Monkey at Mission South Chicago, I picked up an eighth to review.
773 Kush, named for the Chicago area code, is a hybrid cross of unknown origins. This batch of flower tested at 25.55% THCa, 1.13% CBGa, and 27.28% total cannabinoids. Total terpenes were 3.03% of the panel with β-myrcene, β-caryophyllene, limonene, and humulene being the heaviest.

The eighth was a handful of variously sized buds ranging from pea sized to popcorn. Trichomes were visible as amber-colored frost kissing the outside. A noticeable absence of orange hairs gave the flowers a uniform green tone throughout.
As soon I opened the jar, the scent hit with a top end combo of pungent musk, pine, diesel, and sage. Underneath, lemon, orange, wet dirt, and moss supported the aroma profile. Initially, these nugs felt dry to the touch, but as I broke them down with my fingers, I found a hash style greasiness on the interior.
That heavy pungent musk, pine, and diesel were the highlights of both the inhale and exhale. The smoke was thick, and the flavor was pure Kush, reminding me of a memorably gassy and funky cut of OG Kush that I sampled in Colorado almost a decade ago.
I smoked 773 Kush at several points in my schedule and found it worked best in the evening or at night. After every bowl, an introspective haze kept me quiet and “in my head.” My crown and brow tightened with a heavy buzz, making a true headband. I liked 773 Kush most as a pain reliever, even if I had to limit my dosing to later in the day. Overall, the dense, pungent flavor and heavy-handed effects worked well.
