Review: Gelato Cake by Kaviar
“Cake-y” strains have cemented themselves as a mainstay of the modern cannabis menus, and it’s easy to understand why. Pleasing both flavor chasers and the novice consumer with taste experiences outside the classic vegetal-skunky tones of old school cannabis, cake strains are here to stay. That was why I was happy to sample Kaviar’s Gelato Cake. I picked up a sample at Star Buds Burbank to see what the strain had to offer.
Gelato Cake is an indica dominant hybrid cross of Gelato #33 and (Birthday Cake x Strawbanana Cream). This batch of flower tested at 0.62% CBGa, 1.04% Delta-9-THC, 24.7% THCa, and 26.36% total cannabinoids. Terpenes were 3.53% of the total weight with, β-caryophyllene, limonene, linalool, ocimene, and α-humulene being the most prevalent.

One rough cut cola top and a few popcorn flowers made up the weight. Dense with bright turf green contrasting against deep-royal-purple sugar leaf remnants, the flowers carried a solid milky colored trichome presence and some bunched, dried orange hairs. These buds were dry on the surface but ground up with a nice soft texture and left a hashy greasiness on my fingers when loading into my bowl.
The scent from the jar was a savory blast of black pepper, forest floor, and creamy aged cheese. The black pepper became even more pronounced after grinding and really dominated the aromatic profile. In the bowl, the pepper subsided substantially while the creamy cheese took over at the inhale, while notes of oregano and cinnamon appeared at the exhale. The flavor remained rich and savory the entire time.
Gelato Cake induced a heavy body presence before I had finished the bowl, induced waves of vibrations that radiated outward from my core sending tingles into my arms and legs. Mentally, I was dazed, lost in my thoughts but becoming more and more tired as time passed.
This one-two punch of heavy physical vibrations and energy-sapping mental fogginess left me ready for the couch and not much else. For more Illinois News Joint reviews, visit here.
