Review: Kaviar Cones by Star Buds
The goal of all the Illinois News Joint review series is to build an educational database of detailed reviews of every cannabis product on the Illinois market, so we enjoy reviewing all products. We enjoy even more, though, reviewing a product that is new to Illinois. But what we enjoy most is reviewing a product before it officially launches in Illinois. For the next couple of weeks, along with our regular reviews, we will be highlighting reviews in which we take a “First Look” at products about to launch in Illinois. Our first “First Look” review is of a new infused preroll product that will be launching in a couple weeks from a new Illinois craft grow: Kaviar Cones by Star Buds.
Kaviar Cones are a blend of high-quality flower, oil, and kief. The 1.5g prerolls are strain-specific, this one being Layer Cake. Layer Cake is a hybrid three-way cross of Wedding Cake and GMO and (Triangle Kush and Skunk #1). This Kaviar preroll tested at 0.18% THCv, 13.97% THCa, 21.76% Δ9 THC, 0.14% CBCa, 0.22% CBC, 0.18% CBGa, 0.70% CBG, and 37.17% total cannabinoids. The terpene profile led with a whopping amount of β-caryophyllene, followed by α-humulene, α-bisabolol, linalool, d-limonene, and caryophyllene oxide.

The preroll comes with a custom-glass tip with the Kaviar logo on it. The container when opened released a sweet-cake aroma mixed with alcohol and lacquer. The Kaviar Cone burned evenly and slower than expected. The custom-glass tip helped keep the leaky oil and resin from coating the lips, and the back end of the tip made for an easier grip while smoking.
The complex flavor was diverse, leading with creamy cake, vanilla pastry, citrus, and woodsy spice. The oil and keif added stronger notes of herby pine, sweet citrus, and earthy gas, especially on the back end. Despite the trio of ingredients, the smoke was smooth on the inhale and exhale.
The onset was almost immediate, leading with a rush of lightness lifting the weight from my shoulders, neck, and head. The head high led with a euphoric and uplifting buzz that kept creeping higher and higher. The first half of the high caused a heavy headband effect and was more cerebral, creative, and clearheaded than expected. With extra doses, they thought process could be a little spacy, but that’s inevitable when I’m trying to smoke an entire 1.5g infused preroll by myself.
When the body buzz fully kicked in, an overall relaxation and calmness soothed the body and cerebral high as well. The body buzz took longer to develop, but it also kept creeping into a stronger and stronger muscle and joint relaxation, until the effects became a weighted blanket for the full body. I prefer infused joints to regular joints because of the extra kick the provide, and Layer Cake Kaviar preroll delivered medical-patient worthy relief for overall body aches and pains.
