Review: Monkey Spunk by Cultivate/Ieso
Certain cannabis strains have a distinct flavor I correlate with high levels of the terpene terpinolene, especially when mixed with high levels of β-myrcene. Terpinolene was my first thought when I smelled and smoked an eighth of Cultivate’s new line of flower, Monkey Spunk by Ieso.
My assumptions were correct about the terpinolene and β-myrcene, but the real surprise was in the rest of Monkey Spunk’s terpene profile. Monkey Spunk is a hybrid cross of Gorilla Glue #4 and Lilac Diesel. This batch, picked up from Consume Carbondale, tested at 1.99% THC, 22.36% THCa, 24.36% total cannabinoids, and 4% total terpenes.

The top three primary terpenes were β-myrcene, β-caryophyllene, and terpinolene. The next two terpenes were what caught my eye. Ocimene followed terpinolene, which was normal from what I’d seen with test results of flower with similar aroma and flavor profiles. The next terpene, though, was α-phellandrene, which I didn’t recognize or remember seeing in other test results, especially at this high of percentage.
So for the first time in more than a year I had to research a terpene. The terpene α-phellandrene has been associated with the reduction of pain sensitivity and increase energy levels, which fit perfectly with Monkey Spunk effects.

Two huge pinecone shape big buds and one smaller bud filled out the eighth. The moisture of the light and medium green bud was perfect for pulling off of or grinding it up.
As mentioned, the Monkey Spunk had that distinct aroma and flavor I associate with terpinolene. The aroma delivered a piney lemon-lime and creamy floral with added notes of hops, pine, turpentine, diesel, and earthy mint.

The flavor really nailed that distinct sour lemon-lime, zesty black pepper, diesel, floral turpentine, and mint. The sour lime, citrus, and piney mint loaded the front of the inhale with back notes of floral pepper. The exhale led with an earthy hops and floral pepper with notes of gas and turpentine.
Though listed as an evenly balanced hybrid, I would classify the effects of Monkey Spunk as a Work Sativa. The powerful head high hit right away with a cerebral effect that boosted energy, mental state, and focus (though too many doses would hinder complete focus, which is what I prefer in a Work Sativa to keep me from overmedicating).
The body buzz too came on early and added layers with more doses. The body buzz relaxed my cramps and muscle aches while working and out running around. Though the buzz had energy, I never found it antsy or racy. Monkey Spunk also boosted my appetite after work sessions.
Overall, I mainly used Monkey Spunk as a Work Sativa during my first work session of the day and later when I needed a pick-me-up or run errands. For those who enjoy a strong lemon-lime flavored Work Sativa, Monkey Spunk would be worth sampling.
So far, Ieso has been 2-for-2 with its newly release strains. Check out the other newly released strains by Cultivate: Oreoz, LA Kush Cake, and Jungle Cake.
