Review: Peyote Critical by Funky Monkey
Every time I look through dispensary menus in Illinois, it seems like I see a new label popping up. There are so many labels out now that I’m falling behind fast in sampling them, and even brands that have been on the market for a while, such as this Funky Monkey, have missed my grasp. That’s why I jumped at the chance to sample the Peyote Critical flower by 4Front.
Picked up from Mission South Chicago, Peyote Critical is an indica leaning hybrid cross of Peyote Purple and Critical Kush. This batch of flower tested at 0.54% THC, 0.54% THCVa, 18.74% THCa, 0.26% CBCa, 0.34% CBGa, and 20.4% total cannabinoids. The heaviest terpenes were β-myrcene, limonene, and β-caryophyllene, β-pinene, and linalool with total terpenes testing at 1.24%. Funky Monkey provides full testing data on their packaging, a move I always take the time to commend.

This eighth came as a handful of popcorn-sized flowers. Most of the color profile was dominated by a deep royal purple with hints of forest green randomly splashed across the buds. There was a noticeable trichome frost at the leaf creases and some vibrant orange hairs.
The trim was executed well with just a few deep purple sugar leaves remaining on the buds. The flowers were noticeably dry in my hand, and that carried into the grind where the final product came out more powdery than I prefer.
The aroma from the jar was very light, and I had to hunt a bit to find hints of black pepper, wet forest wood, and light vanilla. When smoked the wet forest note appears at the front backed up by hints of pine and an earthy green unroasted coffee bean flavor.
The effect was a one-two punch of a fast acting mental daze and a heavy warm blanket sensation that worked together to make me, as the comedian, Katt Williams, once said, “happy, hungry, sleepy.”
I usually judge cultivars by the motivation they provide, and this fell squarely on the “eat cookies and curl up in bed” category. Even low doses of Peyote Critical left me weighed down and unmotivated. Overall, the heavy-handed effect profile worked well for nighttime needs. For more Illinois News Joint reviews, visit here.
