Review: Roll Aways Infused Caramels by Zoi
One of the categories lacking real depth in the Illinois market is chocolate. While there are a handful of companies working the confection, the specialty processing required keeps many producers away. Craft infuser Zoi has recently hit the market with an entire line of chocolates, so I picked up the Zoi Roll Away Infused Caramels to review.
Zoi Roll Aways Infused Caramels came as a five-pack of either 10mg or 20mg candies for a total of 50mg or 100mg per container. The ingredients were sugar, milk, evaporated milk, tapioca syrup, tapioca flour, butter, sea salt, cocoa butter, cocoa bean, sunflower lecithin, and cannabis oil.

Each individually wrapped candy was roughly an inch across and three-quarters of an inch tall. Circular with a rounded top, the plain chocolate shell was reminiscent of a classic truffle candy. The chocolate shell was thick enough to provide a crisp break, but the caramel center was clearly the star of the show.
The chocolate shell was rich and sweet. It started to melt and delivered a cocoa note as soon as it hit my palate. The caramel inside was creamy with a slow moving, oozing flow that sped up as it melted on my tongue. The depth of the toasted milk solids in the caramel created a strong contrast to the roasted herb tones from the cannabis infusion. Classical in execution, these candies would have fit in at any high-end confectioner.
Hitting well above their weight class, both the 10mg and 20mg versions induced a strong head and body change by the half-hour mark. A wave of indica-style pressure pulled at my eyelids before moving out into the rest of my body. Anxiety-free but unmotivated, the mental buzz was great for relaxation or sleep but too heavy to take on active days. Overall, the Roll Aways delivered a luxury-level chocolate experience with an infusion that was stronger than anticipated.
