Review: Rosin Press Starter Kit by Ju1ceBox
I should have had this review done weeks ago, but I have been having way too much fun playing around with the review product: The Ju1ceBox Rosin Press Starter Kit.
Ju1ceBox provides quality tools and information that are “engineered specifically for the average consumer” to make rosin safely at home. Though I consume more cannabis than average, I consider myself an average consumer. So I wanted to try one out. Ju1ceBox makes three sizes of rosin presses: the handheld, the lever action, and a top twist press.
My Rosin Press Starter Kit included the Ju1ceBox Handheld Press, thirty tickets (parchment paper cut to size), stainless steel pre-press, six-inch circular dab mat, silicone container, and double-sided five inch collection tool.
The full kit also includes one gram of hemp flower (excluding Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota), a Boveda pouch, and a sticker. The Ju1ceBox handheld press uses a compatible 110/220volt plug in and is engineered to ensure the perfect combination of pressure and heat to two 1″x1.5″ plates.
Stainless Steel Pre-Press
I recommend using the Stainless Steel Pre-Press. For each press, I pre-pressed about a gram each time. Another reason this review took so long was because I wanted to find the most suitable fresh strains. This is Donnie Burger.
So far, I have pressed Pineapple Punch, Donnie Burger, Northern Lights, Luckleberries #59, or Wedding Cake. This is Luckleberries #59.
The pre-press formed my flower into the perfect-size puck.
I placed the puck inside one of the thirty parchment papers that were already cut to size. Then I was ready to press.
The Ju1ceBox Handheld Press
On my first press, once the puck was centered perfectly between the handheld press’s two 1″x1.5″ plates and locked in place, I applied the maximum hand pressure to the press as possible without strain. After a minute or two, the heat, pressure, and the 45-degree downward angle of the plates helped the rosin quickly ooze out from between the plates.
I wasn’t sure how long to press the puck, but after a couple more presses, I thought I’d found the sweet spot for the perfect amount of press time, until I tried another strain. Then I realized the length of press time changed slightly with each strain.
The plates allowed terpenes that melt at different temperature to be pushed out one at a time (without burning) and cool in a safe zone for a quicker collection off the wax papers. This helped produce the highest-quality rosin and maximum yield with only one press. The collection tool easily and cleanly scraped off the rosin from the quality parchment paper.
When I pressed the Donnie Burger, I wasn’t sure if I had tighten the press enough, and midway through, I tried to squeeze it tighter but accidently opened the press. At first I thought I’d wasted a perfectly good gram because the bud had not yielded to its potential. So I quickly replaced the wax paper and re-pressed the same puck and squeezed out the rest of the rosin. Problem solved. During a couple other presses, I tried to press the puck a second time to check if any rosin remained, but when pressed correctly the first time, the puck did not need a second press.
I didn’t know exactly how much each bud yielded. I didn’t have a scale that allowed me to accurately weigh it, but I was happy with the yields. From what I could calculate, each press was producing between 10-20%. In fact, I was surprised how long the rosin and its potent effects lasted. The difference in the yield, really, was about the quality and freshness of each strain. Obviously, the fresher, stickier, and trichome filled buds yielded the most rosin that best match the flower’s flavor. I’ve enjoyed every yield.
I had already-judged Cannabis Cup concentrates in my drawer, but late at night, I could not stop smoking my pressed Donnie Burger and Luckleberries #59 rosin. The Donnie Burger and Luckleberries #59 rosin delivered an intense body and mind relaxation that also produced a strong appetite and induced a long night of sleep.
I used the six-inch circular dab mat, silicone container, and double-sided five-inch collection tool that came with the kit for pressing and collecting rosin. But I also used them for nearly every other cannabis related actively at my work desk. The mat was the perfect size for any dabbing project.
Another aspect I enjoyed about the compact handheld press was that the entire kit was easily portable and storable. I was able to press a gram of flower then slide the press back in its sleek-black box and into the closet or drawer for safe discrete keepings.
Even after this review, I’ll try to find the best strains for the best yields to product the best rosin for late-night medicating. The handheld press has definitely added to how and with which medication I can include into my health regiment, especially at night.
