Strain Review: Lou’s Legacy by Bedford Grow
Recently, I have been dreaming about having an Illinois strain named after me (or ILNJ) as the ultimate cannabis industry goal. Usually, one has to be a celebrity rapper, basketball player, well-known activist, or possess other fame or status to earn a coveted strain name. I am none of those. But the namesake for this review’s strain has given me hope for a future ILNJ strain bred specifically for my medical needs.
Lou’s Legacy by Bedford Grow that I picked up at Maribis of Springfield was named after Louis “Lou” Dineff, who was not a famous cannabis industry figure. Lou and his sister Laurel Dineff created Bedford Grow in 2013. Lou succumbed to cancer shortly after being awarded Illinois medical cannabis licenses, and the strain was named after him. The strain is “Lou’s Legacy” that drives the Bedford grow team to help others.
Lou’s Legacy is a hybrid cross between Chemdawg #4 X (Northern Lights X Haze). Bright orange pistils and tiny white trichomes packed the chunky spade-shaped buds, and as always with Bedford Grow, the dense light green buds were well trimmed. This batch tested at 25.87% total THC levels.
The aroma and flavor hit my sweet spot. The terpene profile for this batch about exploded with six terpenes fighting for the top terp, with limonene leading the way. With high levels of limonene, terpinolene, terpineol, and a double dose of beta-pinene and alpha-pinene, the flavor and smell first hit with a sweet citrus, pine, and diesel. The usual prominent terpenes beta-caryophyllene and alpha-humulene added notes of earthy spice, especially on the back end of the inhale and exhale.
For a hybrid strain, the effects also hit my sweet spot. The heavy limonene and pinene presence in the strain delivered a strong but clear cerebral head high that included a touch of energy and euphoria. The rest of the prevalent terpenes seemed to be fighting for the heavier than expected body buzz. The cerebral onset hit within minutes. But the body buzz crept up on me, especially because I wasn’t expecting.
By mid-buzz though, the relaxation eased my pain and muscle aches. The body buzz increased with the each doze, while the cerebral effects remained stimulated and euphoric. Late in the buzz, the body buzz continued, but the cerebral effect produced not so much thoughtlock as I’d call thought trance. I wasn’t locked in a thought or no thought. I was locked in a trance of comforting thoughts. Eventually, the buzz ended with complete body sedation and a cerebral tiredness.
Lou’s Legacy touched on all my favorite characteristics for hybrids and has now become my favorite Bedford Grow strain. And who knows? Twenty years down the line, maybe a young cannabis activist will proclaim the “ILNJ stain” as the reviewer’s favorite medical strain that hit all the sweet spots.
