Three new Original Memes to end the year
Progress is difficult to measure when stuck in the daily grind of work. So every year, I look back at the work I have created to get a better frame of reference. One aspect of Illinois News Joint I didn’t expect to expand as much as it has is our Original Memes page. Since launching, News Joint Original Memes, we have created and published more than 25 original memes and nearly 20 Groverbs.
Our Original Memes, as mentioned, are most often esoteric, outdated, and counter to the latest meme fade. Recently, we published probably our most obscure reference to the 1978 movie Goin’ South, directed by Jack Nicholson, in which I channel my inner Henry Moon and my love for the strain Green Crack. The latest original meme makes fun of cannabis companies that have no actual product but have plenty of swag. Along with our Groverbs, we have created a few New Joint Grow Journal memes as well.
Our cannabis Groverbs are part of an effort to inspire registered patients to grow their own medicine, Illinois News Joint created a series of Groverbs memes for our Original Memes page. Our Groverbs are tongue-and-cheek creations or adaptations of famous proverbs from around the world.
As mentioned, I create memes for me, as a creative outlet. I prefer to create memes from a spark of personal creativity and not from other’s actions or trends. I am often asked what goes into the creation of our memes. In general, I have five rules for creating original memes for Illinois News Joint.
- The meme has to entertain me. If I think the meme is funny and/or entertaining and delivers what I want for an original meme, I truly don’t care if others enjoy the meme or not.
- To entertain me, memes usually have to be funny, offbeat, eccentric, void of clichés, and/or esoteric, but most importantly, I want our memes to be unique, unexpected, and creative. Plus, we really enjoy satirical backhands.
- I don’t follow or chase meme trends. I won’t hop onto “trending” memes or rehash worn-out memes that everyone is plastering across social media.
- I don’t force the creation of memes on a schedule. When the germ of the idea hits me, I write it down and see where it goes from there.
- I create and design each meme from scratch. It takes too much time and usually is not worth the time. But Memes are a creative outlet for me that most of publishing Illinois News Joint does not supply.
Eventually, we hope to have enough Groverbs to create a small book we can hand out at events to further our push for medical patients to grow medicine at home.
