Ax-wielding man shot dead by dispensary security guard
The Chicago Police and Fire Department reported today that around 10:05 a.m. a man wielding an ax allegedly attacked a security guard at Zenleaf (West Loop) dispensary on Halsted Street in Greektown Chicago. After an argument with the 37-year-old security guard ensued, the ax-wielding man allegedly swung at the guard and eventually struck the guard in the left leg. A physical struggle ensued before the security fired shots and killed the alleged attacker.
On arrival, police found the security guard with a laceration on his left leg. The alleged attacker was unresponsive on the ground. Investigators recovered an axe and a firearm on the sidewalk.
An eyewitness, who lives across the street from Zenleaf West Loop dispensary, was in bed debating whether to get up when he heard a “bunch of gunshots.”
“Looked out the window to see if I could see anything and saw a few people putting tourniquets on the security guard,” said the eyewitness, who goes by @brad_pittsburgh on Twitter. “Cops showed up soon after.”
The eyewitness captured a couple photos of the crime scene shortly after the incident and shared them with Illinois News Joint (see cover photos). An investigation remains ongoing.
Emergency Medical Service transported the guard from the 222 South Halsted Street to Northwestern Memorial Hospital to treat the lacerations on his left leg and was listed “in good condition.” The alleged attacker was transported to Stroger Hospital and later pronounced dead at 10:31 a.m. For more Illinois cannabis industry news, click here.
