The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recently released the last nine months of medical cannabis sales totals after launching a new medical cannabis patient registry system on April 29, 2025. IDPH noted in the release of the May 2025 sales totals that “A new Medical Cannabis Patient Registry System was launched. Numbers of patients reported may vary between systems.” On average, the new sales totals were around $6 million less than the totals before the implementation of the new registry system. This also does not account for medical patients who shopped with medical discounts at recreational dispensaries.

The 2026 total retail sales by licensed medical cannabis dispensaries now total $12,522,331.80. The current total number of active patients in the Medical Cannabis Patient Program (MCPP) as of February 28, 2026, is 119,911. By the end of November, there were 9,461 health care professionals who participated in MCPP.
