News Joint Grow Journal 40: Hella Jelly
For the third entry in our News Joint Grow Journal about my four Work Sativa strains, I give the final update on my Hella Jelly by Humboldt Seed Company. Hella Jelly is a cross of Notorious T.H.C. and Very Cherry.
The Hella Jelly was the fastest flowering plant I’ve grown. Throughout early veg, the plant grew a little shorter than the other three sativa-themed strains: O.M.G. by Deep Space Creations, Lemon Tree from NWG Genetics, and Anti-Lemonade by Anti-Apparel/Curtis Crosses. Throughout vegetation, the Hella Jelly thrived with large fan leaves. I pruned the basic dead leaves and any other obvious cleanups, but otherwise, left her alone until the end. Instead of topping the plant like I’d done with the other three, I FIM cut the Hella Jelly to see if the plant would catch up in height. About a week before flipping light schedules to flower the plant, I performed Kyle Kushman’s supercropping and “chiropractic” techniques, cracking the stem and branches from the bottom to the top by twisting them in opposite directions. The plants loved it.
Once flowering, Hella Jelly delivered a sweet grape aroma, especially in the later stages. The FIM top provided several large colas at the top of the plant, but with a shorter flowering time, Hella Jelly never reached the height of the other three plants. Toward the end of flowering, the plant began a fade that cycled through all the fall colors.
After 47 days of flowering, I chopped the Hella Jelly. The total harvest was a little more than two ounces of dried and cured buds. The flower tested (sponsored by Grow5 Champaign) at 23% THC and less than 2% CBD. Throughout all stages of the grow, I used Cultured Biologix nutrients and SLF-100 from Blooms Brothers Hydro, along with Fish Shit. I flowered Hella Jelly under a BlackBird light sponsored by HLG.
Hella Jelly buds appeared fluffy but actually were thick and dense. The sweet grape aroma became more pronounced in the flower, and the longer the buds cured, the sweeter the candy grape aroma and flavor. The flavor also added mixed fruit notes, as if coating sugar on top of a bowl grapes, cherries, strawberries, nectarines, and plums. The effects were what I hoped for with a euphoric cerebral head high with energy and focus to go with a heavy body buzz and tasty flavor profile. To follow News Joint Grow Journal, click here.
