Review: Blood Moon Moonrock by Kaviar
Kaviar still stands alone as one of the only licensed cultivators in Illinois bringing a (somewhat silly) but absolute cannabis classic to the state, moonrocks. I first reviewed the label’s Blue Unicorn Poop moonrock back in January. Recently I picked up from Cloud 9 Champaign another strain, Blood Moon, to follow up with.
Blood Moon is a hybrid cross of EmergenC and Kush Mints. This moonrock tested at 9.494% THCa, 50.544% THC, and 61.977% total cannabinoids.
Encrusted with dusty beige kief, a small-black-rough sphere the size and shape of a yogurt covered raisin rolled around in the center of the container. The dark oil had completely encased a small forest green piece of flower that acted as a backbone to support the oil around it. The exterior of the moonrock was dry to the touch, while the interior was sticky and moist. Eventually I found the easiest way to dose out the moonrock was cutting off a small piece with a knife.
Inside the jar, a very light blend of sweet-almond paste, diesel, and freshly turned earth was present but took some real olfactory investigation to bring out. The moonrock required a technique similar to hash smoking, with long, slow pulls and steady heat allowing the oil to melt, bubble, and vaporize. The flavor carried the same notes from the aroma; almonds, diesel, and earth but they were accompanied by additional tones of lavender and rose, freshly churned butter, and roasting meat. There was very little structure to the overall profile as the flavors seemed to come and go at random, reflecting the blend of multiple ingredients.
The effects were immediate, putting a heavy pressure on my eyes and crown and tightening my awareness window before the bowl was finished. Gradually, the pressure spread outward becoming a warming indica-style muscle relaxation as it built. Initially, my energy levels began to fall as my awareness closed, but this turned before the experience peaked, boosting my mood and focus on the back end of the high. This low then high effect made the Blood Moon Moonrock more “indica then sativa” buzz than a true middle ground hybrid.
