Review: Chocolate Chunk by matter.x
Celebrity endorsements and brand collaborations are becoming the norm in the Illinois cannabis industry. The latest comes from PharmaCann and its new premium flower brand matter.x. The new brand and the Allman Brothers Band have collaborated on a new strain release, Chocolate Chunk. So I blasted some of my favorite Allman Brothers Band songs and kicked back with headphones on and a clean bong in hand.
Chocolate Chunk, which is available exclusively at Verilife dispensaries, is a 100% indica Afghani landrace from the Hindu Kush mountain range. Picked up at Verilife Ottawa, this eighth tested at 20.71% THCa, 0.28% THC, 0.25% CBGa, and 21.24% total cannabinoids. The total terpenes reached 3.67%, leading with α-pinene, limonene, β-myrcene, β-pinene, and ocimene. More on the secondary terpenes below.

The eighth came as one huge chunky (hence the name) heart-shaped bud and a couple medium-sized buds. The dark green buds with rusty orange pistil protruding throughout were covered in tiny creamy trichomes.
The buds delivered a dark chocolate, spicy cocoa, herbal, pine, and woodsy coffee aroma. The flavor added richness to the dark chocolate and spice with a sweet nuttiness, especially on the inhale. The exhale added more spice, earthy pine, and citrusy hops. The flavor profile was not my normal preference, but the flavor of Chocolate Chunk grew on me to the point of cravings.

The effects were my exact preference. The more I smoke landraces the more I prefer them to hybrid strains. Don’t expect a heavy thougthlock or make-me-stupid-and-lazy effects. At the same time, Chocolate Chunk produced an extremely soothing mental state and body buzz.
The potent head high first hit with a euphoria that picked me up mentally and lowered my stress and tension. Soothing was the word I kept coming back to for this review. My mind was relaxed and decompressing as the high increased, but I also was able to function while writing this review.

The body buzz crept in slowly but became similar to the head high in that it was heavy but at the same time soothing. For me, it’s difficult to find a night strain that does not totally kill my motivation to think straight or move but at the same time eventually knocks me out. And that was exactly what Chocolate Chunk did for me. The secondary terpenes included the batch of four that always deliver a heavier body buzz than other strains. These terpenes included α-terpineol, guaiol, and endo-fenchyl alcohol, along with ocimene, which was one of the primary terpenes.
Late in the buzz and with extra doses, Chocolate Chunk delivered the more sedative side of the effects. A heavier body buzz took over, and my mental buzz transitioned easily to sleep. It also boosted my appetite, especially after long periods of use. Now, I really want to try any version of hash made with Chocolate Chunk.

I medicated with Chocolate Chunk while working late-late at night when I knew I wanted to fall asleep in less than three hours. It allowed me to work and distress at the same time, and then fall asleep without the normal racing thoughts I have when I don’t mentally decompress before bed.
And of course, I also jammed out to three albums-worth of Allman Brothers Band songs while just relaxing. Admittedly, the high combined with instrumental stretches of “Jessica” were simpatico. I can’t say that Allman Brothers Band and Chocolate Chunk go together better than any other strain and band, but I enjoyed binging a band I haven’t listen to in quite some time.

I’ll end this review with lyrics from my favorite Allman Brothers Band song…
“When you can’t find the light
That guides you through a cloudy day
When the stars ain’t shining bright
You feel like you’ve lost you’re way
When the candle light of home
Burns so very far away
Well, you got to let your soul shine”
