Review: Moon Blend by Kaviar
While it’s great to develop a list of tried and true strains that work for you, the real adventure of modern cannabis is constantly sampling new genetics that may provide new flavors and experiences. I’m always looking for new strain names when I’m at the dispensary. My latest stop at Star Buds Burbank, I found Moon Blend from Kaviar, a new cultivar for me. I picked up a sample to see what the strain had to offer.
Moon Blend is a hybrid cross of Space Runtz and Devil Driver. This batch of flower tested at 0.69% THC, 25.88% THCa, and 26.93% total cannabinoids.

Two sharply trimmed Christmas-tree-shaped cola tops and a few popcorn-style buds, with the same tight trim work, carried a bright-milky trichome layer and fiery-orange hairs on top of a turf-green base. These buds were extremely dense, requiring some extra “oomph” to get through the grinder.
The aroma profile carried a blend of top end candy and berry notes, followed closely by a dense funk, earth, and gas combo. Hints of skunk also flashed by adding even more pungency to the aroma. The diesel, earth, and funk notes carried straight through to the palate, decimating any of the sweetness from the top end of the aroma. While the skunk note also disappeared on the palate, a previously undetected black pepper appeared on the finish, bringing in some added spice.
Moon Blend was slow to set in and slow to build, what old heads used to call creeper weed. It wasn’t until roughly 15-minutes after the bowl was finished that I noticed how spaced out and dazed I had become, staring at an open document with nothing on it for longer than I’d like to admit. The mindscape was very dreamy and unfocused.
Physically an overall weightlessness set in combined with waves of tingles that came and went over the course of an hour. Overall, the funky flavor profile and spaced out daze made this strain feel more old school than its genetics indicated and a solid end-of-day buzz. For more Illinois News Joint reviews, visit here.
