Review: Soap by Kaviar
I disagree with many aspects of the hype-strain culture, but some big-name strains do deserve the admiration. Soap is at the top of that list for me. The flavorful Animal Mints progeny is being grown by a long list of cultivators, and the latest version I’ve spotted is from craft licensee Kaviar. I recently stopped into Star Buds Burbank and picked up an eighth to review.
Soap is a sativa-leaning hybrid cross of Kush Mints and Animal Mints. This batch of flower tested at 0.899% CBGa, 0.689% Delta 9 THC, 36.166% THCa, and 37.754% total cannabinoids. Terpenes were 2.3% of the total weight with limonene, β-caryophyllene, linalool, and α-humulene being the heaviest.

Four popcorn-sized flowers, one slightly larger than the rest, carried a bright-olive coloration at the base with bright-turf and lime-green highlights, a hefty amount of wispy fire orange hairs running up and down the buds, and a visibly sparkling trichome frost. Dense with little bounceback under a pinch, the flower fluffed up better after a run through the grinder.
The top of the aromatic profile hit the nose as soon as I opened the jar with a floral blend of lavender, rose, and jasmine. After the floral tones, a rich blend of sugar and fat notes evoked buttercream icing, followed by a finish of malt and ginger. After a run through the grinder, spicy tones of roasted black pepper and star anise appeared. The flavor carried more of the buttercream and floral tones at the front, while the roasty malt tone dominated the exhale.
Despite the sativa nature of the genetics, the high-test numbers created a heavy experiential profile that opened with a physical sensation of heaviness weighing down my entire body, while reliving minor aches and pains. A clarity of awareness characterized the mental state. Calm and collected, focusing on tasks was easy, and my energy levels were lifted slightly along with mood. The heavy physical aspect began to wear off around the forty-five minute mark, leaving an overall muscle relaxation in its place. This was a densely flavored cut of Soap with a heavier than anticipated profile thanks to the high-test numbers.
