Grow Journal 59: Sour Orange by Supernatural Seeds (Part 2)
I’m back with the second half of the Sour Orange grow journal. I left Part 1 of this journal after drying and curing Sour Orange by Supernatural Seeds and mentioning that the plant was one of the most fun plants I’ve grown.
Sour Orange—a sativa-leaning (65%/35%) cross of Clementine, Orange Sherbet, and Tangie—grew dense bulb-shaped dark-green and purple-hued colas with bright-orange pistils and heavy trichome coverage, giving the strain strong bag appeal. As mentioned in the previous entry, I’ve been trying to find orange-citrus-flavored strains to grow, but the “orange-flavored strains” I’ve grown have included with the citrus a heavy dose of cheese aroma and flavor (and I’m not totally sure why).
Sour Orange also carried a cheese aroma that dominated the candied oranges, tropical fruit, and sweet-citrus earth. The longer the buds cured, though, the more the fruity aroma and flavors appeared. Three weeks into cure, more earthy pine, super-sweet skunk, and sour citrus (especially on the back end) that included orange, lemon, and other sour mixed fruit. Not the hard orange flavor I expected, but overall, the flavor profile was layered with an interesting mix of heavy sweetness and sour citrus with a touch of pine and earth.
The effects landed right where I’d hoped for a Work Sativa. The strong head high was cerebral, happy, creative, focused, and energetic but without the raciness. When overindulging, the focus did wane, but the focus and motivation to get work done came back and fit best for morning and day use. For a sativa effect, the body buzz was stronger than expected, starting with small waves of muscle relaxation and ending with a heavy-blanket feeling. The overall buzz was good for gaming, bingeing television, and socializing. Sour Orange also was a consistent appetite enhancer.
