Hemp Cannabis Symposium and Hemp, Hops & Shrooms combine forces
In two weeks, the Hemp Cannabis Symposium and Hemp, Hops & Shrooms festival will host back-to-back events one day apart in Carbondale. The 5th Annual Hemp Cannabis Symposium, sponsored by the Southern Illinois University Cannabis Science Center, is set to start at 8 a.m. Sept. 27 at the Mclafferty Annex, home of the SIU Illinois Food, Entrepreneurship, Research and Manufacturing (iFERM) Hub of the Illinois Innovation Network. The 3rd Annual Hemp, Hops & Shrooms festival, produced by the City of Carbondale and Carbondale Main Street, is set for 3-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.

The Hemp Cannabis Symposium focus is “Cannabis Science: Advancing Academic and Industry Collaboration.” Dr. Jose Leme and Dr. Gage, from SIU’s Cannabis Science Center, are set to host demonstrations on site showcasing how to grow cannabis indoors and how to work with hemp fibers. Dr. Leme is the Assistant Professor of Cannabis Biology & Cultivation Systems at SIU, and Dr. Gage is the Associate Professor of Weed Science and Plant Biology of the School of Agricultural Sciences / School of Biological Sciences at SIU.
The Hemp, Hops & Shrooms festival is scheduled to host presentations and demos from 3-7 p.m. Presentations will include a cooking with mushrooms segment from Flyway Family Farm. Susie Lighty, from Southern Illinois Universities Fermentation Science Institute, will deliver an interactive presentation on terpenes, the aromatic compounds found in plants, and how those terpenes “shape the beer drinkers’ experience.” A Carbondale CommUNITY tent will set up with a kids’ corners with activities for children. Food trucks will be onsite, beer will be sold by Carbondale Main Street, and guests are encouraged to BYOC (bring your own chair) and can BYOB (bring you own beverage) in non-glass containers.
The night will end with Carbondale’s “Off the Rails” Concert from 7-10 p.m., featuring jam-bluegrass band, and the ever-so-aptly named, Off the Rails, headlining the evening, and ska-reggae group UNCHAiNED opening.
