News Joint Grow Journal 23: PuTang by Mass Medical Strains
I’m back with News Joint Grow Journal 2.0: Five Signature Strains (including Tenzin Kush #4 x Hazy Kush by Green Bodhi, Jilly Bean by MzJill Genetics, PuTang by Mass Medical Strains, Peanut Butter Cookies by Tastebudz, Strawberry Cough by Kyle Kushman). This third journal entry spotlights PuTang.
For quite some time, I’ve wanted to try PuTang but could never find it in Illinois. The description of the strain included all the characteristics I prefer. PuTang is known for its orange citrus and candy grape flavors, and the effects are energetic with a euphoric, motivating, anti-anxiety headspace and a happy instead of a heavy body buzz. All effects I look for in a Work Sativa.

The medium-tall plant’s flowering time is 8-9 weeks with an expected medium to heavy yield. The THC levels range between 23-27% with terpinolene and myrcene as primary terpenes. The plant is expected to finish in 8-9 weeks. PuTang won 1st Place in the 2019 Commonwealth Cannabis Cup and named HighTimes Magazine Top 10 Strains in 2019.
My PuTang seed popped September 1. Since, the plant has thrived. Even during the seedling stage when I messed up the PH balance, the leaves turned lighter green but did not die, unlike the leaves on the Peanut Butter Cookies and Strawberry Cough (more on that in my next two journal entries).

PuTang, instead, performed well through those two bad weeks, and once I fixed the PH balance, the plant’s darker green color returned, and the plant took off. Along with the Tenzin Kush #4 x Hazy Kush, PuTang outgrew the other three plants in the tent and gained more and more smell.
I have become obsessed with the smell of plants while in vegetation. I’m interested in how the smells change throughout the grow cycles. I can’t stop sniffing my fingertips after daily low-stress training on the branches. Instead of using coated wire as with my last grow, I rubbed and slightly bent each branch daily to open the middle of the plant for more light and keep an even canopy.

From early on, PuTang had the most interesting smell. PuTang was a fast grower as a seedling and after transplanting. Even before I transplanted the plant into my five-gallon buckets, PuTang gave off an orange/tangerine aroma. As the plant grew, the orange aroma thickened and added a pure sugar smell. Late in veg (not to get ahead of myself), the plant added a grape and funk to the sugary orange aroma. My fingertips smelled as if I’d had them dipped in candy all day.
As with the Tenzin Kush #4 x Hazy Kush, the PuTang plant has to be watered about 20% more than the other three plants, and I already could tell that the 2-3x stretch in flower will test the space limits of my tent if I didn’t top the plant early.

Overall, from seed to transplant, I have not had one complaint with the plant, only excitement for a final product.
In the next installment of the PuTang journal entry, I will top the plant (along with the Tenzin Kush #4 x Hazy Kush) to try to keep the branches at somewhat of an even canopy with the other plants.
The next News Joint Grow Journal (24) will spotlight Peanut Butter Cookies by Tastebudz. Follow all of our Grow Journals here. Or click here to follow News Joint Grow Journal. A Prairie State of Mind.
