Review: XXX by Legacy
I’ve always been interested in what consumers consider the most important aspect of flower if percentages had to be assigned to the following categories: aroma, flavor, effects, and bag appeal. Mine is somewhere around: 60% effects, 25% flavor, 10% aroma, and 5% bag appeal. However, those percentages change when I discover one of those strains flavor chasers are constantly searching for. As part of our “First Look” review series, I ran across the flavor-chaser strain, XXX, when I picked up from nuEra Champaign the first ever flower drop from the soon to launch Illinois brand Legacy.
XXX, bred by Ethos, is a hybrid cross of Lemon Berry Candy OG and End Game Punch Line #3. This eighth tested at 21.19% THCa, 0.78% Δ9-THC, 0.92% CBGa, and 22.90% total cannabinoids. Terpinolene accounted for half the terpene profile, followed by limonene, ocimene, β-pinene, β-myrcene, and α-pinene. The secondary terpenes included an interesting trio of α-terpineol, 3-carene, and α-phellandrene.

When Legacy launches in about week, the new brand will set the standard for packaging flower in Illinois with its use of TerpLoc® pouches from Grove Bags, which help with terpene preservation, mold prevention, and weight retention. The childproof pouch contained four large fox-tailed buds and one smaller nug that were dense but had a little spongy bounce-back to them. The buds were dark green with purple leaves and dark orange pistils blended in.
The aroma and flavor profiles were complex and diverse. From the pouch, the aroma hit with berry turpentine, citrus, sweet lemon-lime, piney hops, sour grapes, and petroleum skunk. The flavors on the inhale and exhale delivered combinations of sweet berries, lemon-lime, candied pineapple, and gas. The back end of the exhale provided the most consistency with a sharp artificial sour grape mixed with petroleum funk and citrus.
With the heavy terpinolene profile, the effects were uplifting, cheerful, and mostly clearheaded. With heavy doses, which I did trying to figure out that grape-funk flavor on the exhale, the thought process wandered a bit but always came back to functioning. The head high settled heavy in the crown of the head and eye sockets.
The body buzz developed slowly but eventually settled in as an almost pulsing relaxation starting at the torso and working its way out. The body buzz became increasingly heavy, even in the later stages of the high. XXX was closer to a brunch or lunch strain than a wake-and-bake strain. The overall uplifting and happy buzz also carried an even-keeled relaxation that kept it from becoming too racy or sedative, which also made it useful for me in the afternoons and evening to counter muscle soreness and pain while working.
